Train passengers are being urged to plan their journeys carefully this Christmas season due to essential maintenance and upgrades on rail lines in the Western region.
Network Rail has announced that although most train services will operate as usual, maintenance work scheduled over Christmas and New Year could cause disruptions for some travelers.
Key repairs will take place at Dolphin Junction near Slough, a busy section that handles between 10 and 14 trains per hour. During the works, only two of the four tracks will be operational, potentially leading to increased crowding on some trains.

From December 27 to January 4, there will be no direct train services between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa. Passengers are advised to change trains at Swindon or Bristol Parkway to reach Cheltenham Spa. Additionally, some train services will operate on amended schedules during this period.
It’s important to note that no train services will run on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.
Marcus Jones, Network Rail’s Western route managing director, explained, “Since fewer passengers travel during the Christmas to New Year period compared to a regular week, this timeframe allows us to carry out essential upgrades while minimizing disruption.”
He added, “While most services will continue running across the Western route, some will be affected by the planned engineering work. Passengers should plan ahead by checking National Rail Enquiries or contacting their train operator.”
Richard Rowland from Great Western Railway (GWR) said, “We’re focused on maintaining smooth travel this Christmas. Please be aware that trains may be busier than usual right before Christmas and around the engineering work. We recommend booking in advance to secure the best fares and to plan your journey carefully.”
Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and plan ahead to ensure stress-free travel during the festive period.
