Train Passengers Advised to Plan Ahead Amid Christmas Rail Disruptions

Train passengers are being advised to plan their journeys carefully this Christmas, as Network Rail prepares for essential repair and upgrade work on the Western route.

While most train services will operate normally, scheduled maintenance during the festive period may cause delays and cancellations. Specifically, point repairs at Dolphin Junction near Slough—an area serviced by 10 to 14 trains per hour—will reduce track availability from four to two tracks.

Between December 27 and January 4, there will be no direct services between London Paddington and Cheltenham Spa. Passengers are encouraged to use connecting services via Swindon or Bristol Parkway. Additionally, some train times will be amended during this period.

Passengers should also note that no trains will run on Christmas Day or Boxing Day, as per usual.

Marcus Jones, Managing Director of Network Rail’s Western route, emphasized the benefits of scheduling these upgrades during a quieter travel period: “Far fewer people travel by rail between Christmas and New Year compared to a normal working week, which allows us to carry out vital upgrades while minimizing disruption.”

He urged passengers to check schedules carefully and plan their journeys in advance through National Rail Enquiries or their train operators.

Richard Rowland of Great Western Railway (GWR) added, “We’re committed to keeping passengers moving throughout the Christmas season. However, the period just before Christmas will be particularly busy, and engineering works immediately after will affect some services. We recommend booking tickets early and planning your journey to avoid inconvenience.”

Passengers are encouraged to stay informed and plan ahead to ensure smooth travel during the holiday season.
