Frazer Hammill, a beloved actor known for his role in the acclaimed series Happy Valley, tragically took his own life just one day following a police arrest, an inquest revealed.
On December 30, 2025, the 41-year-old was found deceased at his home in Doncaster after hanging himself. During the inquest held at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on April 20, it was disclosed that Frazer left a note on a neighbour’s door, along with a key to his property. The note urged them not to enter and to contact the police, informing them of his intentions.
The previous day, Lancashire Police had arrested Frazer and questioned him at a Doncaster police station. Officers reported that he appeared “in good spirits” upon leaving the station and expressed no concerns regarding his mental wellbeing. Lancashire Police have yet to provide further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

Area Coroner Louise Slater concluded that Frazer’s death was a suicide by hanging, documenting the medical cause of death as “1a. hanging.” She stated, “Frazer Hammill passed away at his home on December 30. He was a devoted family man and a talented actor. Prior to his death, he left a clear message directing neighbours to notify authorities, indicating his intentional act.”
Paramedics attempted resuscitation but were unsuccessful, with Frazer’s time of death recorded at 2:13 pm. Coroner Slater added, “Frazer had been cooperating with police inquiries the day before and had left notes for loved ones. This was a deliberate and planned act with the clear intention to end his life.”
In a heartfelt courtroom statement, Frazer’s sister Caroline Hammill expressed the family’s devastation. She shared that none of them realized he was battling mental health struggles or feeling overwhelmed enough to consider suicide. Caroline described Frazer as a man “happy in life” who deeply loved his family, including his nieces and nephews.
The John Godber Company, where Frazer had worked, released a statement mourning the loss: “It is impossible to put into words how much he will be missed by everyone who had the joy of working with him. Frazer possessed a huge, loving heart and immense talent. We are truly heartbroken.”
Lamin Touray, a longtime friend and colleague who performed alongside Frazer across the country, posted a moving tribute on social media. He recalled Frazer as “one of the kindest, most loyal, and talented actors I’ve ever met.” Lamin noted their recent conversations about future plans and goals for 2026, emphasizing that, despite all appearances of success and emotional wellbeing, it was not enough to prevent this heartbreaking outcome.
Frazer Hammill’s sudden passing leaves a profound void in the acting community and among all who cherished his warmth, humor, and talent.
