Tragedy Strikes: Runner Dies During West Country Trail Race

During “The Big Cheese” trail running event in Cheddar, Somerset, a participant tragically lost their life after suffering a severe medical issue. The event, which took place on Sunday, April 6, saw 300 runners competing over a challenging, hilly 15-mile off-road route through the Mendip Hills, including over 2000ft of hill climbing.

The devastating incident occurred approximately four miles into the race, with the participant collapsing and ultimately being declared dead on the scene. The organizers expressed their condolences on Facebook, acknowledging the impact of the tragedy on the running community and extending sympathies to the individual’s family and friends.

A fellow participant shared a harrowing account of the events, detailing the desperate attempt to provide aid and the involvement of medical professionals who ultimately were unable to save the runner’s life.
