Traffic Delays Expected Due to A46 Roadworks for 350-Home Development

Motorists traveling along the A46 Shurdington Road should brace for delays and disruption in the coming months as roadworks related to the construction of a 350-home development, Greenway Chase estate in Leckhampton, are set to cause traffic complications. The ongoing development by Miller Homes is progressing, with the new estate poised to offer a range of two-to-five bedroom homes.

The A46 stretch between the Up Hatherley Way junction and Moorend Park Road has already experienced prolonged traffic hold-ups, especially around the Kidnappers Lane junction, which is part of the construction site. Gloucestershire County Council’s website has listed a series of roadworks scheduled for April, May, June, and July, including multi-way signals and a road closure.

The current roadworks involve two-way signals for Severn Trent works near the Moorend Park Road junction until April 25, with further multi-way signals for Open Reach scheduled for April 30 near the Kidnappers Lane junction. Subsequent multi-way signals on Shurdington Road for foul water connection to the Miller Homes development are expected from May 6 to May 30.

From June 9 to July 18, additional multi-way signals are planned for storm and foul water connections near the Kidnappers Lane junction. Kidnappers Lane itself will also witness roadworks for similar connections during this period. The council has also announced a road closure on Kidnappers Lane near the Shurdington Road junction from July 21 to July 25.

The development, which features two main entrances at the Kidnappers Lane junction and near Hillfort Close, is progressing in stages with the final completion scheduled for January 2026. Street names for the estate, including Berkshire, Tamworth, Saddleback, Willow, Stable, and Dormouse, have been proposed, reflecting the site’s heritage and the surrounding environment.

The project has not been without controversy, with initial environmental concerns resulting in alterations to the original scheme. The use of air source heat pumps, solar panels, and other sustainable features have been highlighted as part of the development’s offerings, with the approval ultimately secured following adjustments to address environmental impact and community needs.

As roadworks associated with the development continue to impact traffic flow on the A46 Shurdington Road, commuters are advised to plan for potential delays, particularly during peak hours.
