Toulouse Trip Inspires Gloucester Rugby’s Emerging Identity

Gloucester Rugby’s evolving identity is taking clear shape following their gritty 26-19 Gallagher Premiership victory against Harlequins. The triumph, highlighted by Arthur Clark’s decisive try in the 73rd minute, sealed a league double over their rivals and reinforced their growing confidence.

This pivotal clash was marked by Gloucester’s dominance in set-pieces and a strong finish, key areas that contributed to their critical win. With both clubs vying for the eighth spot—and the final Champions Cup qualification—Gloucester currently leads by five points, while Harlequins face pressure from teams below, including Newcastle.

New technical director Chris Boyd, the seasoned Kiwi coach credited with Northampton’s resurgence, has joined Gloucester to guide their development. Head coach George Skivington revealed that a recent trip to Toulouse played a significant role in shaping the team’s goals and style for the remainder of the season.

“Before the Prem Rugby Cup period, a few of us coaches visited Toulouse to observe their training and align on what we want to achieve going forward,” Skivington explained.

“We understand the league’s limitations but aim to collect as many points as possible and climb the standings. Over the next eight games, we want to embody our vision, pursue our objectives, and play quality rugby.”

Skivington praised his forwards for their renewed excellence in the set-piece, an area that had waned amid the team’s increasing attacking focus over the past 18 months.

“I’ve always valued set-piece performance, but recently it’s been average due to our attack push. The forwards have put in tremendous work in recent months, and today we reaped the rewards when it mattered most.”
