Top Health Threats for the UK in 2024 Outlined by World Health Organisation

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has revealed potential health threats for the upcoming year, with climate change and sexual transmission standing out as major concerns. Dr Maria Van Kerkhove, an infectious diseases expert from the WHO, highlighted three significant health threats for 2024: Coronavirus, Dengue Fever, and Mpox (previously known as Monkeypox).

Coronavirus, with its persisting impact, continues to pose a significant risk with a global rise in cases. The vaccination coverage for at-risk groups remains low, leading to frustrations among health experts, including Dr Van Kerkhove.

Dengue Fever, a viral infection typically common in tropical and subtropical regions, is also on the list of threats for the UK. The rise in Dengue cases globally has been attributed to climate change, with increased rainfall, humidity, and temperature creating favorable conditions for mosquitoes, the carriers of the virus.

Mpox, an illness caused by the monkeypox virus, has garnered attention as it spreads through sexual contact. There have been calls for vaccination programs to prevent outbreaks and reduce transmission, especially within high-risk groups.

It is crucial for individuals to recognize the symptoms of these potential health threats and seek appropriate medical attention if needed.
