Tom Knowles, the former Cambridge United, Yeovil Town, and Walsall winger, is set to leave Forest Green Rovers at the end of his contract, ending a successful stint at the club. The departure follows a contract dispute centered around an extension clause that Forest Green believed they could activate. However, it emerged that the clause was only valid if the club achieved promotion to League Two, a condition that was not met.
Knowles, who transitioned from winger to full-back under the management of Robbie Savage, joined Forest Green as Steve Cotterill’s first signing in the summer of 2024. His impact was immediate and impressive, earning him the Fans' Player of the Season award for the 2025/26 campaign after scoring more than ten goals.
The 27-year-old also claimed the club’s Goal of the Season last year with a memorable 94th-minute free-kick against Eastleigh. His clever near-post strike secured a vital 1-0 victory, showcasing his skill and composure under pressure.

A consistent presence on the pitch, Knowles featured in 45 of 47 league games under Savage’s management. While Savage praised Knowles’ performances, stating, “Knowlesy won player of the season; he’s been brilliant, but I think Kyle and Mendy have been better,” it was clear he remained integral to the squad.
Despite missing a crucial penalty alongside teammate Liam Sercombe during the 2024/25 play-off semi-final against Southend United, Knowles retained his status as a fan favourite. His departure marks a significant loss for Forest Green Rovers as they prepare for the upcoming season.
