Tom Kerridge, the renowned Michelin-starred chef and beloved TV personality, has courageously shared the pivotal moment that inspired his dramatic 12-stone weight loss. Known across the UK for his culinary expertise, Tom’s life took a profound turn after the birth of his son, Acey, in 2015.
Facing the reality that an unhealthy lifestyle might prevent him from witnessing his son grow up, Tom resolved to make significant changes. At 52, he committed to cutting out alcohol, carbohydrates, and sugar, a decision that helped him lose an astounding 12 stone (approximately 76 kilograms) over three years.
Tom’s journey to health was further influenced by his son’s ADHD diagnosis, which subsequently led Tom to discover his own neurodivergent traits. This realization shed new light on why the lively, high-energy environment of a kitchen resonates so deeply with him.

Speaking to the i newspaper, Tom explained, “People who aren’t neurodivergent might find a busy kitchen overwhelming—the fire, ice, noise, orders, and conversations all at once. But for me, this environment is electrifying. It’s the same with filming TV shows—cameras, lights, microphones, and even challenges like wind blowing pepper into my face on a beach.”
Tom has also shared insights into his weight-loss strategy, which he calls the “dopamine diet.” This approach focuses on foods that stimulate dopamine, the brain’s ‘happy hormone,’ helping to make healthy eating both effective and enjoyable. According to his website, “Over three years, I lost eleven stone and built a low-carb diet around ingredients that boost dopamine. If you’re struggling to lose weight, this method can make it easier and more rewarding.”
While Tom aims to avoid sugar most of the time, he allows himself occasional indulgences, particularly when dining out. Speaking with Men’s Health, he said, “I generally avoid sugar in any form. Maybe once a month, I’ll have dessert when we’re out, but usually, I’ll opt for cheese instead. I’ve tried to find a ‘beer diet’ but sadly, it doesn’t exist.”
Tom Kerridge’s story is one of determination, health, and self-discovery. His transformation highlights not only the power of lifestyle change but also the importance of understanding oneself.
