Tom Kerridge Reveals the Truth Behind Gordon Ramsay’s On-Screen Persona

Tom Kerridge, the acclaimed chef returning tonight on Great British Menu, has opened up about what fellow celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is truly like beyond his fiery television persona. Speaking about various TV culinary stars, including the late Keith Floyd whom he described as “brilliant,” Tom offered a fresh perspective on the personalities behind the camera.

While acknowledging the unique talents of many chefs, Tom highlighted Saturday Morning host James Martin as being “so good live” and an excellent cook in his own right. He also praised Rick Stein of Long Weekends for his “deep passion for everything,” from poetry to food.

When it came to Gordon Ramsay, Tom pointed out the “brilliant Gordon energy” that fans see on screen but clarified that Ramsay’s on-screen fierceness is a crafted persona. On the Red Talks podcast last year, Tom described Gordon as having a character designed for television—especially for the American audience—while in real life, he is a “phenomenal human.”

“He’s incredibly good at everything that he does,” Tom explained. “He’s funny, empathetic, and kind. He builds businesses and maintains a loyal team around him for years. He’s meticulous without being a control freak.”

Tom underscored Ramsay’s extraordinary achievements, noting, “He was one of the first British chefs to win three Michelin stars. Forget the TV drama—just as a chef, Gordon is world-class, one of the best ever.”

In addition to this tribute, Tom Kerridge opened up recently about his personal journey after being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), which he now sees as a “superpower.” Reflecting on his past struggles with alcohol addiction, Tom said, “Alcohol addiction comes from an incredibly selfish place. It’s a space to escape into your own world.”

Don’t miss Tom Kerridge on Great British Menu tonight (Tuesday, April 21) from 7 pm to 8 pm.
