Renowned TV chef Tom Kerridge has opened up about a pivotal health wake-up call that led him to completely transform his lifestyle. Known for his culinary expertise and TV appearances, Kerridge recently reflected on the moment that motivated him to make lasting changes for his wellbeing.
In an interview with Yours magazine, Tom revealed that turning 40 was the catalyst: “I was approaching 40 and my lifestyle was so unhealthy. I was eating badly and drinking far too much, and I thought, ‘This can’t go on.'”
Since then, Kerridge has committed to maintaining a healthier routine. “I still have a pretty healthy lifestyle and I’m at the gym five times each week,” he shared, emphasizing the balance he strikes between indulgence and fitness. Despite his culinary career, which often involves tasting rich foods—“I have two puddings in front of me that need tasting right now”—he stays disciplined by incorporating regular exercise and mindful eating.

Tom also revealed, during a candid episode of the “We’re Not Getting Any Younger” podcast with Lisa Snowdon and Andy Goldstein, the extent of his previous unhealthy habits. Before quitting alcohol, his typical day included early shifts at his pub followed by heavy drinking late into the night. He detailed how he would consume a pint of Negroni after work, followed by eight to ten strong lagers, and finish with half a bottle of gin at home.
Beyond his personal health journey, Kerridge has become a culinary powerhouse. Fans may recognize him from shows such as Saturday Kitchen and The Great British Bake Off, including hosting its spin-off, Bake Off: The Professionals. His impact extends to the hospitality industry with the opening of The Hand and Flowers pub in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, in 2005. Notably, the pub was the first in the UK to earn a second Michelin star in 2012.
Now, two decades after launching his first venue, Tom owns or operates five additional establishments: The Butcher’s Tap and Grill, The Coach, Kerridge’s Bar and Grill, Kerridge’s Fish and Chips at Harrods, and The Shed. His journey underscores not only his culinary success but also his inspiring commitment to health and balance.
