Renowned UK chef and television personality Tom Kerridge has opened up about the powerful fear that inspired his astonishing 12-stone weight loss journey. Known for his culinary expertise and charismatic presence, the 52-year-old chef credits fatherhood and a recent health diagnosis for prompting a complete lifestyle overhaul.
The turning point came with the birth of his son, Acey, in 2015. Faced with the reality that an unhealthy lifestyle could shorten his life, Kerridge was determined to change for good. “I feared I wouldn’t be around to see him grow up,” Tom revealed, explaining how this emotional wake-up call led him to cut alcohol, carbohydrates, and sugar from his diet.
Over a transformative three-year period, Kerridge shed approximately 76 kilograms (12 stone), adopting a low-carb regimen centered on foods that stimulate dopamine – the brain’s “happy hormone.” He describes this approach as his “dopamine diet,” which made weight loss not only effective but also enjoyable.

Tom also shared that his son’s ADHD diagnosis prompted him to explore his own neurodivergence, giving him newfound insight into his personality and passions. He elaborated to the i newspaper: “People who aren’t neurodivergent walk into a kitchen and feel overwhelmed – the fire, the noise, the multiple orders and conversations. But that environment makes me come alive.”
Kerridge’s enthusiasm extends beyond cooking; he thrives in high-energy, sensory-rich settings, whether preparing meals or filming television shows. Despite his strict dietary changes, he allows himself occasional indulgences, mainly cheese or a dessert once a month, as he told Men’s Health.
An advocate for hospitality workers and businesses, Tom Kerridge continues to inspire not only with his culinary talent but also through his candid discussions on health, mental well-being, and lifestyle change.
