Tom Kerridge Reflects on Jamie Oliver and the Evolution of Chef Rivalries

Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has opened up candidly about his evolving relationships with fellow culinary legends, including Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, and Marco Pierre White. These chefs have collectively shaped modern British cuisine, but like any competitive field, their interactions have shifted over time from rivalry to friendship.

During a recent appearance on the Red Talks podcast with Red Richardson, Kerridge discussed how tensions have eased as the chefs grew older and more experienced. Richardson brought up a moment when Jamie Oliver mentioned Marco Pierre White had once insulted him, highlighting the intensity of their earlier competition.

Responding, Kerridge acknowledged the energy and talent of Jamie Oliver, describing him as “magic” – a brilliant cook with the ability to connect globally through his cookbooks and charisma. He explained that while rivalries may have existed in the past, those have largely faded.

“As the industry has matured, there’s been a lot more openness and collaboration among us,” Kerridge said. “We all face the same challenges now — running businesses, dealing with financial pressures — so the rivalry has diminished. Me and my peers are now just great mates.”

His reflections come as the hospitality industry continues to face tough hurdles, including rising energy costs exacerbated by international conflicts, ongoing repercussions from the Ukraine war, and the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many establishments are struggling to stay afloat financially.

Yet for Kerridge, the passion for hospitality transcends profit. In a recent Sunday Times interview, he said, “You don’t do hospitality just to make money. It’s a vocation driven by love for the trade and the people in it. You keep going because you care, regardless of profit margins.”

Fans can catch the return of The Great British Menu, where Kerridge serves as a judge, airing Thursday, 9 April at 6pm on BBC Two.
