Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has offered a heartfelt glimpse into his relationship with his 12-year-old son, Acey, describing their bond as full of both “monstrous fireworks” and great laughs. Tom, 52, and wife Beth Cullen-Kerridge share their son Acey, who is a rugby enthusiast and attends their local primary school.
Beth, a sculptor, spent last year exhibiting her work across America, while Tom describes Acey as his “mini me,” sharing many common interests including motorbikes and culinary pursuits. Tom has affectionately called Acey an “absolute unit,” noting that by the age of nine, his son could deadlift 80kg.
Speaking openly about fatherhood, Tom revealed that growing up in a single-parent household meant he is still learning how to be a dad while Acey is learning how to be a son. “We have monstrous fireworks but we also have the best laughs. The best way I can describe my relationship with him is I am like his big brother, just with money,” Tom explained. Their relationship is marked by playful games and daft things, followed by sibling-like fallouts rather than a traditional father-son dynamic.

Acey’s passion for rugby is a key part of his identity; he plays in positions one and three on the field and is inspired by former England international Joe Marler. Tom highlights his son’s competitive spirit, including a “red mist” temperament and a strong dislike of losing, traits Tom admires and strives to guide. “He can be the most gentle, wonderful human but he’s also got this streak. I love that, I try to control, to enhance it,” said Tom.
The similarities between father and son sometimes lead to spirited arguments, much to the amusement and occasional exasperation of Beth. Tom reflected on these moments, saying, “Sometimes it’s just like arguing with yourself, and then afterwards we both laugh about it.”
Fans of Tom Kerridge can catch him tonight at 7pm on BBC Two as he returns to The Great British Menu. The episode features top chefs from Northern Ireland preparing a six-course meal, judged by Tom, Great British Menu Champion of Champions Lorna McNee, and comedian Phil Wang.
