Todenham Man Undergoes Life-Saving Quintuple Bypass After Mistaking Heart Attack Symptoms for Indigestion

Adam Smith, a 54-year-old from Todenham, Gloucestershire, appeared fit and healthy, but he was unknowingly facing a critical heart condition. Initially, he dismissed his chest tightness and breathlessness as mere indigestion. Over the course of less than a year, everyday activities like walking his dog or pushing a lawnmower became exhausting, signaling a deteriorating condition.

Encouraged by his wife Eve, Adam visited his GP, who referred him to a local chest pain clinic. There, a nurse’s keen observation revealed that Adam’s arteries were dangerously blocked, and he was described as a “heart attack waiting to happen.” In September 2021, Adam underwent a quintuple bypass at Oxford Heart Centre, John Radcliffe Hospital, spending five days recuperating before returning home.

Reflecting on his ordeal, Adam acknowledges the lockdown made seeking in-person medical advice challenging, contributing to his initial misinterpretation of symptoms. “I thought I was just losing fitness, but my wife reminded me of our family history with heart disease, pushing me to get checked.”

Determined to regain his health, Adam embraced a rigorous rehabilitation journey. From walking short distances to participating in the London to Brighton Bike Ride, he has consistently pushed himself to rebuild stamina and strength. Since his surgery, Adam has completed the 54-mile ride four times, raising over £10,000 for the British Heart Foundation alongside friends and family.

Adam’s commitment extends beyond cycling; he practices yoga, Pilates, and weight training multiple times weekly to maintain cardiovascular health. Although on lifelong cholesterol and blood pressure medication, Adam feels grateful for the NHS’s intervention that saved his life.

His story highlights the importance of recognizing potential heart attack symptoms, which can sometimes mimic indigestion. The British Heart Foundation warns that stomach pain or burning sensations may indicate heart problems, especially when accompanied by chest discomfort, breathlessness, nausea, or dizziness.

Adam’s experience serves as a crucial reminder: don’t ignore persistent or worsening symptoms. Seek medical advice promptly—even during challenging times—to prevent heart attacks that occur every five minutes in the UK.
