Gloucester City manager Daf Williams expressed disappointment following a late goal that saw his team suffer a 2-1 defeat at Yate Town on Saturday afternoon, a result that all but confirms third place for Gloucester in the league.
Both teams entered the match with high stakes: Yate Town fighting to escape relegation and Gloucester City aiming to secure second place. Gloucester started strongly, with a quickly executed move leading to James Waite’s goal in the seventh minute. Sion Spence’s intelligent control and pass allowed Waite to fire the ball into the roof of the net, giving the visitors an early advantage.
Yate Town fought back in the 35th minute through Marlon Jackson, who capitalized on slick play at the edge of the box to send a powerful, low shot into the far corner, leveling the score heading into halftime.

The second half was a tense and scrappy affair, with both sides struggling to gain a clear upper hand. Then, in the 90th minute, Joe Guest unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the box that soared into the top corner, sending the home crowd into raptures and clinching three crucial points for Yate Town in their fight to avoid relegation.
Reflecting on the match, Williams said, “We started really well, scoring a goal that was a direct reflection of our training focus. However, injuries disrupted our flow and momentum, which made it challenging to maintain control.”
He added, “The second half lacked rhythm. We made tactical changes to regain control but didn’t quite trouble their keeper enough. The winning goal was a spectacular strike following some confusion off a throw-in. We have to accept it graciously and credit Yate for their effort.”
Looking ahead to the season’s final game against champions Walton & Hersham, Williams called on supporters to rally behind the team. “This result is a setback, but we must recover quickly. We’re in a strong position, and it’s essential for everyone to come together to finish the season on a high note.”
The lineups were as follows:
Yate Town: Sainsbury, Taylor, Bennett, Ball, Larvin (Sady 17), James, Guest, Jackson, Mannings, Taylor (Jenkins 90), Taylor-Clarke (Zebroski 77).
Gloucester City: Thompson, O’Regan, Williams (Wildig 77), Spence, Watts (Siddall 7, Leadbitter 77), Thomas (Phillips 86), Waite, Cross (Hanks 66), Stretton, Mohammed, Simpson.
The game was officiated by referee Craig Scriven, with an attendance of 876 fans.
