“Today was an opportunity to learn” – Gloucester City manager Daf Williams after late heartbreak at Yate Town

Gloucester City manager Daf Williams expressed his disappointment after a late goal snatched victory from his team in a 2-1 defeat at Yate Town on Saturday afternoon. The result all but seals Gloucester City’s third-place finish.

Both teams entered the match desperate for a win, but for contrasting reasons. Yate Town needed the points to strengthen their battle against relegation, while Gloucester was aiming to secure second place in the standings.

Gloucester started brightly. Within seven minutes, Sion Spence received a well-timed through ball and skillfully controlled it before setting up James Waite, who expertly fired home into the roof of the net to give City an early lead.

Yate responded in the 35th minute with dynamic build-up play on the edge of the box, culminating in Marlon Jackson striking low and hard into the far corner, leveling the score just before halftime.

The second half was a tense, scrappy affair, with both sides struggling to gain a clear upper hand. Then, in the 90th minute, Joe Guest unleashed a thunderbolt from outside the box that curled into the top corner, sending the home supporters into joyous celebrations and securing a vital three points for Yate.

Williams reflected on the match, “We started really, really well and scored a great goal — exactly what we worked on this week. Unfortunately, two injuries disrupted our momentum and dynamic, and we struggled to overcome that for various reasons.”

“The second half was scrappy. We made some tactical changes to try to gain control, which worked at times, but we didn’t test their goalkeeper enough. The winner was a superb strike, born from some confusion off a throw-in. We have to take it on the chin and credit Yate for their performance.”

Looking ahead, Williams emphasized the importance of learning from the defeat. “Today’s result is an opportunity to learn as we prepare for bigger, more important games.”

Gloucester’s season concludes with a challenging fixture against champions Walton & Hersham. The manager urged fans to continue supporting the team, saying, “As a group—players and staff—it’s been about building momentum. This is a setback, but we must recover and rally together.”

“To the supporters, we need an all-in mentality. We’re in a strong position; let’s unite and make these final weeks enjoyable for the club.”
