As the UK prepares for another intense heatwave with temperatures predicted to soar above 30°C—and in some areas reaching 34°C—many are searching for effective ways to stay cool and comfortable. Amid the usual advice to stay indoors and use fans, gut health expert Tim Spector offers a fresh perspective: your fridge might hold the key to better coping with the heat.

Tim Spector, a leading specialist from ZOE, underscores the significant role gut health plays when the body faces physical stress such as extreme heat. “When temperatures rise, the body is under increased strain, making hydration essential for digestion, circulation, and regulating body temperature,” he explains.

Dehydration, he warns, can negatively impact digestion and gut sensitivity, causing bloating, discomfort, and sluggishness—common complaints during hot weather. Maintaining a healthy gut environment helps mitigate these symptoms.

To support gut health in the heat, Spector recommends focusing on water-rich, plant-based foods. Items like watermelon, cucumber, berries, tomatoes, citrus fruits, lettuce, and leafy greens not only aid hydration but also supply valuable fiber, minerals, and polyphenols that nourish gut microbes.

He also advocates incorporating fermented foods, such as live yoghurt and kefir, to promote a balanced microbiome. According to Spector, opting for lighter meals packed with plants rather than heavy, processed foods helps prevent sluggishness and digestive discomfort during heatwaves.

On meal timing, Spector advises consistent consumption of these foods throughout the day rather than waiting until dehydration or overheating occurs. Suggestions include live yoghurt or kefir with berries, nuts, and seeds for breakfast; water-rich snacks like melon and cucumber during the day; and vegetable-rich, lighter lunches and dinners featuring beans, lentils, whole grains, herbs, and olive oil.

Corroborating these recommendations, gastrointestinal surgeon Mr. Antonios Athanasiou from Nuffield Health echoes the message. He highlights the benefits of high water content fruits and vegetables for hydration and suggests steering clear of heavy or greasy meals when temperatures rise. He also notes that probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt can be advantageous for maintaining gut health in hot weather.
