Concerns over speeding on Southam Road in Cheltenham have intensified after data revealed that more than 6,000 vehicles traveled at least 10mph above the 30mph speed limit within a single week. Between March 15 and March 21, official speed monitoring on the B4632 Southam Road, north of Mill Street in Prestbury, recorded 72,899 vehicle trips.
The average speed during this period was just over 33mph, while the 85th percentile speed exceeded 38mph. Among the recorded vehicles, 18,265 were traveling between 35mph and 40mph, 4,891 between 40mph and 45mph, and 933 between 45mph and 50mph. Additionally, 187 vehicles were recorded driving between 50mph and 55mph, and 87 exceeded speeds of 55mph.
Local resident Richard Lawler expressed deep concern about the statistics, calling for immediate action from Gloucestershire County Council and Gloucestershire Police. “The data collected is deeply concerning. This is a serious public safety issue that cannot be ignored,” Lawler stated.

Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed that they have conducted speed checks across the county and have visited the Southam Road and Mill Lane junction eight times this year, catching over 180 speeding offenders. A police spokesperson said, “We are committed to keeping people safe on the roads and take appropriate action against those who drive at excessive speeds or dangerously. Speeding is among the top causes of road fatalities and injuries in the county.”
The spokesperson added that the Camera Enforcement Team regularly targets this location and works closely with partner agencies, the Special Constabulary, and the public to identify key areas for enforcement.
Gloucestershire County Council has been invited to comment on the issue.
