This Cosy Pub in the Forest of Dean is the Heartbeat of Cinderford High Street

Nestled in the midst of a struggling high street in Cinderford, The Golden Lion stands out as a beacon of warmth and vitality. Unlike the boarded-up shops surrounding it, this historic Forest of Dean pub still thrives as a friendly local hub, blending tradition with a modern twist.

Established in 1868, The Golden Lion has long been a cornerstone of Cinderford’s community. Recent renovations under new ownership have breathed fresh life into the venue, transforming it into much more than just a pub. On weekends, live music fills the air, while quiz and bingo nights keep spirits high throughout the week.

During a recent lunch visit, the pub’s inviting atmosphere was palpable. Its cosy wood-paneled interior and spacious wooden floor create the perfect setting for socialising and entertainment without feeling over the top. The disco light and speaker tucked away hint at lively Saturday night gigs, supported by a playlist stacked with nostalgic late 90s and early 2000s pop tunes.

Drink options cater to all tastes, including popular beers like Carling, Carlsberg, and Hobgoblin, alongside classic ciders such as Thatchers Gold and Haze, plus fruity Somersby variants.

The food menu offers a hearty selection, from small bites like £6 halloumi fries and pigs in blankets to pub favourites including steak and ale pie (£13.50), bangers and mash (£11.50), and lasagne (£13.50). Impressively, even the priciest dish – fish and chips with tartare sauce and mushy or garden peas – remains affordable at £14.50.

I opted for the house burger, featuring a juicy beef patty topped with melted cheese and fresh salad, served alongside salted fries and coleslaw for just £11.50. The burger was clearly made with care, boasting freshness and flavour that rival higher-end pubs in nearby regions.

Landlady Nikki Norman exemplifies what makes The Golden Lion special. Friendly and approachable, she warmly chats with every customer and values the strong local support that keeps the pub thriving despite Cinderford’s ongoing economic challenges. She acknowledges the town’s decline but expresses hope: “We’re fortunate to be a community pub. Our customers know we’re here and support us. The town council is also doing great work on regeneration.”

In a high street facing hard times, The Golden Lion is more than just a pub—it’s a vital gathering place, a source of enjoyment, and a bright spot of resilience for Cinderford’s community.
