This Common Habit Ages Your Face and Smile More Than Smoking

Many everyday habits are known to speed up the ageing process, especially behaviors like smoking, drinking alcohol, and excessive sun exposure. These are well-documented causes of skin damage that make the face look older. However, there’s another widespread habit that millions of people engage in daily — one that isn’t often discussed but can seriously age your smile and overall facial appearance: nail biting.

Although nail biting may not directly harm your skin, it can take a significant toll on your mouth and teeth. Since your smile is one of the first things people notice, it’s essential to keep it looking its best. Dr Tony Taunk, a dentist at Implant Perfection, urges people to quit nail biting before it leads to irreversible damage.

“Many people bite their nails without realizing the long-term consequences,” says Dr Taunk. “The pressure from biting can wear down the enamel on your front teeth, which leads to misalignment, gaps, and an overall aged look over time.”

Nail biting is also linked to teeth grinding, a condition that can cause headaches and jaw pain. As we age, our enamel naturally thins and exposes the yellowish dentin beneath, which contributes to a discoloured, older-looking smile. Nail biting accelerates this enamel wear, making your smile look older sooner than it should.

Medically known as onychophagia, nail biting is often an unconscious habit tied to stress and poor impulse control. Besides its cosmetic effects, it can also negatively impact your health. Dr Taunk highlights that “bacteria from fingertips and nails transfer to your mouth, increasing the risks of infections like colds, stomach bugs, and salmonella.”

Our smiles significantly shape first impressions, and even small imperfections can affect how youthful and attractive we appear. Nail biting can speed up enamel erosion, gum recession, and other dental issues, ultimately adding visible years to your face.

Breaking this habit not only protects your teeth but also preserves a bright, confident smile that helps you look and feel younger.
