Slimbridge joint manager Michael Palmer says there is a genuine buzz around the club ahead of Saturday’s pre-season friendly against League Two side Cheltenham Town.
Steve Cotterill’s Robins are set to visit Thornhill Park for the 2pm kick-off, offering the newly promoted Southern League club a unique opportunity to test themselves against professional opposition.
Slimbridge secured promotion by winning the Hellenic League title with an impressive 81 points from 38 games, returning to the Southern League after three years away.

“For a club like ours, occasions like this are truly special,” Palmer said. “This match is not just about the players and staff, but also our volunteers, supporters, and the wider community who have supported us every step of the way.”
“This is a fantastic challenge for our lads who have worked incredibly hard to achieve promotion. Taking on a professional club like Cheltenham is an experience they absolutely deserve to have. These are the moments players remember.”
Palmer hopes the game will also be a positive day for supporters, who have been key to the club’s recent success. “It’s another step forward for Slimbridge and an opportunity for everyone to come together and enjoy local football in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.”
There are strong links between the two clubs. Palmer himself is a former Cheltenham academy coach and lives close to Whaddon Road. Last season’s Slimbridge captain, Charlie Hitchings, also came through the Robins’ youth system, and several current squad members have ties to Cheltenham’s development centre.
“Working within the Cheltenham academy was an excellent environment for learning,” Palmer explained. “I gained invaluable experience alongside some fantastic coaches, and it’s inspiring to see the club continuing to nurture young talent.”
The management hopes to attract an attendance of at least 500, emphasizing that the day is about much more than the final score.
“Events like this bring people together, showcase local football, and provide fans with a memorable afternoon,” Palmer said. “We look forward to giving Cheltenham supporters a warm welcome at Thornhill Park.”
Parking at the ground is limited, but alternatives are available nearby. Volunteers, including chairman Barry Gay, secretary Alena Wrixon, and supporters’ club chairman Colin Gay, will be on hand to assist visitors.
“We are a family club, built on passion and commitment,” Palmer added. “Our volunteers and staff dedicate countless hours because they love this club. Without their hard work behind the scenes, none of what happens on the pitch would be possible.”
