Slimbridge are buzzing ahead of their pre-season friendly against League Two side Cheltenham Town on Saturday, according to joint manager Michael Palmer.
Steve Cotterill’s Robins will visit Thornhill Park with kick-off set for 2pm. The Swans recently celebrated promotion back to the Southern League after three years, clinching the Hellenic League title with an impressive 81 points from 38 matches.
“For a club like ours, occasions like this are truly special,” Palmer said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity not only for the players and staff but also for our volunteers, supporters, and the wider community.

“From a football perspective, it’s a brilliant challenge for our lads. They’ve worked incredibly hard to earn promotion, and now testing themselves against a professional club is an experience they richly deserve. These are the moments players remember, and I’m genuinely pleased they get the chance to enjoy it.
“We also hope it’s a great occasion for our supporters who have backed us tirelessly. This match represents another positive step forward for Slimbridge.”
The clubs share strong ties: Palmer himself is a former Cheltenham academy coach and lives near Whaddon Road. Last season’s Slimbridge captain, Charlie Hitchings, is a former Cheltenham scholar, and several squad members have been involved in the Robins’ development centre.
“Working alongside the excellent coaches and staff at Cheltenham’s academy gave me invaluable knowledge and experience that have aided my own coaching journey,” Palmer added. “The academy has achieved fantastic things, and it’s heartening to see their continued commitment to developing young players and offering opportunities.”
Palmer is hopeful the match will attract an attendance of at least 500 fans.
“Days like this are about more than the result,” he said. “They bring people together, showcase local football, and provide supporters with an enjoyable afternoon in a friendly atmosphere. We’d love to give Cheltenham supporters a warm welcome here at Slimbridge.”
Although parking at Thornhill Park is limited, nearby options are available, with volunteers including chairman Barry Gay and secretary Alena Wrixon ready to guide visitors. Barry’s brother Colin chairs the supporters’ club.
“Slimbridge is a true family football club,” Palmer remarked. “It’s built on people who care deeply and generously give their time simply because they love the club. We are incredibly fortunate to have such support every week, and we never take it for granted.
“Without our volunteers, staff, and families working tirelessly behind the scenes, what happens on the pitch simply wouldn’t be possible.”
