On a recent episode of The Repair Shop on the Road, BBC expert Will Kirk was visibly emotional while restoring a handmade chess set belonging to a guest named Debbi. The story behind the chess set revealed a deeply personal and tragic family history.
Debbi shared that the chess pieces were carefully moulded and created by her late father, who sadly passed away from multiple sclerosis at just 37 years old. The poignant moment unfolded as she reflected on her early memories of playing chess with him, recalling the special family time they shared around the board.
“He was such a family man. Family was his life,” Debbi explained, adding how much her mother sees her father’s traits in her. She revealed that her father’s illness began during the family’s time in Canada, prompting a move back to Scotland to be closer to loved ones. From an active man playing football in the garden, he became bedridden due to the progressive nature of his MS.

Will expressed his sympathy, saying, “I’m really sorry to hear that. It must have been tough on him and the entire family.”
When asked why the chess set was so meaningful, Debbi shared, “My dad put time and effort into crafting each piece. To hold something he held is invaluable to me. Restoring it means I can use it to teach my own children how to play.”
Viewers watching the episode were deeply touched by Debbi’s story. Many shared their condolences and admiration for the beautifully crafted chess set and the heartfelt connection it represents, appreciating the emotional depth behind this special restoration.
