On the latest episode of the beloved BBC series The Repair Shop, a guest was deeply touched when a precious possession of his late friend was restored to its original splendour.
The show, which returned on Wednesday, 25 March, featured skilled restorers Sonnaz Nooranvary and Angelina working on a distinctive lamp brought in by John Wilson from London.
This unique lamp once belonged to John’s close friend Brian, who was renowned for hosting extravagant cocktail parties in his cozy Soho flat during the 1980s. The lamp was central to the apartment’s décor, symbolizing those vibrant times.

John fondly recalled that era, filled with happy memories. However, tragedy struck when Brian was diagnosed HIV-positive during the AIDS crisis. John became Brian’s devoted carer and closest companion until Brian’s passing in the mid-1990s. Before he died, Brian entrusted the lamp to John, making it a deeply sentimental item.
Reflecting on their relationship, John said, “We were really, really close. He was my family.” He added, “It felt natural for me to look after him, to keep an eye on him.”
Over time, the lamp had sadly deteriorated, prompting John to seek the expertise of Sonnaz and Angelina to restore this “very important” keepsake.
After their careful restoration, the moment the lamp was revealed to John brought an outpouring of emotion. “Oh my god! Oh wow. It looks exactly like it did. I can’t believe it — it’s incredible,” he said in awe.
When John switched the lamp on, he was visibly overwhelmed with happiness. “I’m so happy,” he exclaimed.
The restorers commented on how clear it was why Brian had cherished the lamp so much. John, fighting back tears, added, “He’d be really pleased,” pausing to compose himself.
Tom, one of the experts, summed it up: “It’s stunning. I’m absolutely delighted.”
The Repair Shop continues to touch hearts every Wednesday at 8 pm on BBC One.
