A recent study released for MS Awareness Week has highlighted the issue of sexual dysfunction among people with MS. The report, conducted in partnership with the MS Together Charity, revealed that 97% of individuals with MS have experienced sexual dysfunction symptoms, yet fewer than 5% have received help for this issue. The survey, titled “The Missing O,” conducted by British sexual wellness retailer sextoys.co.uk, in collaboration with MS campaigner Roxy Murray and the MS Together charity, brought to light the prevalence of sexual dysfunction and the lack of support available for those affected.
The survey found that 97.4% of respondents had experienced sexual dysfunction symptoms, with some enduring these challenges for over a decade. Shockingly, over two-thirds of respondents felt unable to discuss these issues with their medical providers. Of those who did, only 4.5% felt their concerns were adequately addressed, and more than 16% believed their concerns were dismissed. To address these challenges, sextoys.co.uk has partnered with Roxy Murray to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by individuals with MS, particularly in relation to sexual health issues.
The most common sexual dysfunction problems reported by respondents included anorgasmia (difficulty achieving orgasm) and challenges related to discussing these issues with medical professionals. Roxy Murray emphasized the need for comprehensive education for healthcare providers on MS-related sexual dysfunction, empowering them to offer informed advice and support. She stressed the importance of openly addressing these concerns, as sexual well-being significantly impacts mental health and relationship dynamics for individuals with MS.

Dr. Kyrie Wheeler highlighted the less discussed but equally important symptoms related to the impact of MS on sexual health, such as tiredness, muscle weakness, and reduced sensation. Recommending a holistic approach, Dr. Wheeler suggested the use of sexual aids, talking therapy, and exercise programs to address sexual health concerns and underscored the significance of open communication between patients and healthcare providers.
In light of the challenges faced by those with MS, sextoys.co.uk has collaborated with the MS community to create sexual aid bundles specifically tailored to address the most common sexual health complaints. These bundles are being launched as part of MS Awareness Week, with 100% of the profits donated to the MS Together charity. Amy Thompson, the Founder and CEO of MS Together charity, welcomed the increasing attention being given to the less discussed symptoms of MS and encouraged further research and awareness initiatives.
