It may be tempting to clean your ears with cotton buds, but a GP warns against it and sheds light on the potential dangers. Dr. Stephanie Ooi, a GP at My Healthcare Clinic, strongly advises against using cotton buds due to the risk of pushing wax further into the ear canal, leading to complications such as infection and damage to the eardrum.
Dr. Ooi recommends using olive oil drops to soften the wax or considering microsuction to safely remove it. However, she notes that access to microsuction treatment may not always be available through the NHS. Some GP surgeries offer alternative methods like scraping or flushing the wax, which are generally painless.
In addition, Dr. Ooi addresses the issue of itchy ears, pointing out that persistent itchiness and flaky skin could indicate ear eczema. With an estimated eight million affected individuals in the UK, ear eczema is a non-contagious condition that can be managed with proper treatment. It’s crucial to consult a GP for a diagnosis and explore available treatment options, including medication.

The Cleveland Clinic notes that ear eczema can cause discolouration, dry skin, and itchiness, and individuals are at a higher risk if there is a family history of eczema, allergies, or asthma. To diagnose the condition, a doctor will perform a visual examination of the ears and inquire about symptoms, potentially using a lighted instrument for further evaluation.
Seeking professional medical advice is essential for managing ear-related concerns and conditions.
