The Big Space Cancer Appeal Surpasses £9 Million, New Centre at Cheltenham General Hospital Set to Break Ground Next Year

The vision to revolutionize cancer care in Gloucestershire has taken a significant leap forward, with the Big Space Cancer Appeal reaching an impressive £9 million in donations. This milestone brings the development of a state-of-the-art cancer centre at Cheltenham General Hospital closer to reality, with construction poised to begin next year.

The forthcoming centre promises a modern, patient-focused environment featuring bright consulting rooms, advanced digital appointment suites, and inviting outdoor spaces. Richard Smith, Associate Director of Cheltenham and Gloucester Hospitals Charity, expressed deep gratitude: “The generosity of the people of Gloucestershire has been extraordinary. From donations and gifts in wills to bake sales and charity runs, every contribution is helping bring this vital project to life.”

With £9 million raised, the campaign is ready to advance to the first construction phase. Subject to obtaining planning permission, work is expected to commence within the next year.

Designed with patient comfort and clinical excellence in mind, the new centre will offer naturally lit treatment and consultation rooms, a welcoming waiting area, and beautifully landscaped gardens where patients and their loved ones can find peace and solace.

Consultant Oncologist Dr. Sean Elyan highlighted the centre’s impact, stating, “A bright, spacious healing environment not only enhances patient experience but also supports faster recovery. This facility will transform cancer care for everyone who comes through our doors.”

Long-term cancer survivor Nara Kahkonen shared the profound difference such a centre could make. Diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma at just 20 years old while caring for her infant son, Nara underwent groundbreaking treatments, including a stem cell transplant. “I truly owe my life to the incredible team in Cheltenham,” she said. “When you receive a diagnosis, your world changes overnight. Having a calming, supportive space can make all the difference.”

Currently, more than £17 million is needed to complete the Big Space Cancer Appeal, which will also upgrade existing oncology facilities across the region. This summer, a vibrant art initiative—the Lions at Large Pride of Gloucestershire Trail—will launch to help raise awareness and funds.
