The Tewkesbury Medieval Festival returns this weekend, Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13, promising a thrilling step back into history—despite the soaring temperatures. Organisers have confirmed that the annual free event will go ahead as planned, but with a heatwave pushing temperatures as high as 34°C on Saturday and 31°C on Sunday, attendees are urged to take important precautions.
In a statement released ahead of the festival, organisers advised visitors to come prepared: “Please bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a compact umbrella or sunshade to protect yourself from the sun. This will help you stay cool without obstructing views or causing hazards during the busy event.”
Festival-goers should also be aware that the experience will be intense—loud, hot, and bustling. Common sense and consideration for others are essential to ensure everyone enjoys the festivities safely.

Concerns have also been raised about pets at the festival. Due to the heat and loud noises from battle re-enactments, organisers encourage pet owners to reconsider bringing dogs. An attendee shared a poignant reminder: “On hot days, overheated dogs struggling in the noise were heartbreaking to see. Please think carefully before bringing your pets.”
Founded in 1983 and paused only during the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2021), the festival commemorates the historic Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471. The main events unfold near the town centre, around Gloucester Road on the actual battlefield site, with additional activities at Tewkesbury Abbey and throughout the town.
This year’s schedule runs from 11am to 6pm on Saturday and 11am to 5pm on Sunday, with battle re-enactments starting at 4pm on Saturday and 3pm on Sunday, each lasting about an hour. Arrive early for the best viewing spots. Please note that participation in the re-enactments is limited to registered members of the re-enactors’ households.
Visitors should also note that portable toilets will be available, and dressing appropriately for sun and heat is crucial since shade and shelter on-site are limited.
By following these tips, attendees can safely enjoy Tewkesbury’s rich medieval heritage under the summer sun.
