Despite severe flooding impacting large parts of Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, local businesses are assuring the community that they remain open and operational. The town has faced rising waters as the Severn, Avon, and Swilgate rivers overflowed, submerging streets and landmarks.
Dramatic scenes have captured swans swimming along flooded roads, while cars navigate waters covering main thoroughfares. Yet, businesses on Church Street and beyond emphasize that the flooding hasn’t disrupted their daily operations.
Chris Oxlade-Arnott, owner of Abbey Galleries, explains: “Tewkesbury is used to this. The flood defenses are working as designed. Despite inquiries from concerned customers, we are open as usual. There have been no internet outages or supply interruptions. The main concern is hidden potholes filled with water that could damage vehicles.”

Similarly, Salerno Italian restaurant and Crescent Veterinary Centre report business continuing smoothly. Staff confirm that access remains possible and services are unaffected by the floodwater.
Richard Stanley, leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council, reassures visitors and residents: “While flood levels are high, the roads remain clear and the town accessible. We encourage everyone to enjoy the fantastic shops and eateries here. Our officers continue to monitor the situation closely and are ready to respond if necessary. We are grateful for the resilience of our community during this time.”
Severe flood warnings remain in effect along the River Severn in and around Tewkesbury, but the town’s strong sense of community and preparedness helps it weather the challenge.
