Tewkesbury Businesses Remain Open Amid Flooding Challenges

Despite significant flooding caused by the Severn, Avon, and Swilgate rivers bursting their banks, businesses in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, are operating as usual. Large parts of the town centre have seen floodwaters rise this week, with striking images showing swans swimming down submerged streets and vehicles navigating the flooded main roads.

Local business owners, however, emphasize that the flooding has not disrupted their operations. Chris Oxlade-Arnott, owner of Abbey Galleries on Church Street, explained, “Tewkesbury is used to this. The flood gates are designed to manage situations like these. We’ve had customers checking if we’re open, and yes, despite the weather, business continues normally.”

He also noted that while floodwaters fluctuated, they did not cause major issues such as internet outages or supply interruptions. The main concern remains the hidden potholes beneath the floodwater, which pose a risk to vehicles.

Other businesses shared similar sentiments. A staff member from Salerno Italian restaurant confirmed, “We are open as normal. Flooding hasn’t stopped people from getting here and hasn’t affected our business.” Crescent Veterinary Centre also reported no disruptions.

Richard Stanley, leader of Tewkesbury Borough Council, affirmed that the town is accessible and welcoming despite the high flood levels. “We want to thank our residents and business owners for their continued resilience,” he said. Council officers report no calls for assistance at this time but continue to monitor the situation closely.

Severe flood warnings remain in effect along the River Severn, particularly at Severn Ham and areas surrounding Tewkesbury. The community is urged to stay vigilant, but business and daily life in town persist undeterred.
