Jeremiah Joshua Smith, a serial domestic abuser, has been sentenced to over five years in prison after repeatedly attacking his ex-partner in front of children at her home in Gloucester. The victim, desperate to protect her children and their friends during the terrifying incident, pushed them out of a downstairs window to safety while Smith unleashed horrific violence inside.
The court learned that Smith, 40, forced his way into the woman’s home last July and armed himself with two knives. He slashed the victim’s leg, stamped on her, and threatened to kill her, even demanding she clean her own blood from the floor. The children, who were having a sleepover, fled over a garden fence and sought help from a neighbour after the mother’s quick thinking saved them from further harm.
Smith admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent as well as assault by beating. He has a long history of domestic violence offenses—32 convictions for 64 offenses—dating back to 2006. The court described him as a “very real danger to women,” resulting in an extended prison sentence of five years and eight months, plus an additional three years on licence.

The victim bravely testified that Smith appeared uninvited at her home shortly after she ended their relationship. The night of July 31, he entered with a key, grabbed knives, and violently attacked her in front of the children. Despite injuries including a 7.5cm slash to her leg, a fractured spine, and head wounds, she managed to protect the children and alert the authorities.
Following a police investigation and public appeal, Smith surrendered to law enforcement. In court, he denied certain actions but pleaded guilty to the charges involving the two women who spoke out against him.
The judge imposed a 15-year restraining order preventing Smith from contacting the victims, a prosecution witness, and the neighbour who assisted the children. He was also banned from entering the Kingsway area.
Detective Constable Philpott praised the victims’ courage and emphasized the serious threat Smith poses. He urged others experiencing domestic abuse to seek help and support rather than suffer in silence.
This case highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence and protect vulnerable individuals, especially children exposed to such traumatic situations.
