A Gloucester mother showed remarkable courage by pushing her children and their friends out of a downstairs window to escape a violent attack from her ex-partner, Jeremiah Joshua Smith. The horrifying incident unfolded at her home last summer, where Smith forced his way in and subjected her to repeated abuse in front of the terrified children.
Smith, 40, appeared at Gloucester Crown Court, having admitted to causing grievous bodily harm with intent and assault by beating. Known for a long history of domestic violence, Smith was described by police as “a very real danger to women.” He has a staggering 32 previous convictions across 64 offences, many related to violence against partners.
On the morning of July 31, Smith used a key to enter the victim’s home, where she and her children, along with their friends, were sleeping after a sleepover. Armed with two knives, he attacked the mother, slashing her leg, stamping on her, and threatening to kill her. Amidst the terrifying ordeal, the mother risked her own safety by pushing the children out of a ground-floor window to flee over a garden fence and find help from a neighbour.

Despite sustaining severe injuries, including a fractured spine and deep wounds, the victim’s bravery and quick thinking ensured the children were not harmed. Police arrived shortly after and arrested Smith following a public appeal. He later pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
Smith’s violent outburst included threats, physical assault, and destruction of the victim’s phone. His actions left a lasting impact not only on the victims but also on the children exposed to the violence. The court handed Smith a five year and eight-month prison sentence, plus an extended sentence of three years on license, along with a 15-year restraining order which forbids him from contacting the victims or entering Kingsway.
The victims’ willingness to speak up and provide testimony was commended by investigators. Detective Constable Philpott highlighted the ongoing risk Smith poses to women and praised the courage shown by those who stood up against him.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic abuse and the strength it takes to seek help. Support services are available to anyone affected, reinforcing that no one should suffer in silence.
