Teenagers Arrested on Suspicion of Murder After Pensioner Dies in Cheltenham Attack

Two teenage boys have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in his 70s who was punched in Cheltenham. The victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital after being critically injured in an assault on the evening of Wednesday, April 8.

Gloucestershire Police issued CCTV images in relation to the incident, which occurred at around 7:30 pm near Honeybourne Way, close to Waitrose. According to police reports, the victim approached the two males, leading to an altercation during which one of them struck the man in the face. The victim fell to the ground and was later taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in critical condition, where he died on Friday, April 10.

Initially, two boys aged 16 and 17 were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. Following the victim’s death, both were rearrested on suspicion of murder. The victim’s family and the coroner have been informed.

Prior to the assault, the two teenagers were seen on the Millennium Bridge, where they reportedly threw a large branch at a cyclist below. Fortunately, the cyclist was not injured.

Police continue to review CCTV footage and have appealed to the public for any additional information or witnesses to come forward. Officers have expressed gratitude for the support received so far.
