Fourteen-year-old Oscar Davis from Gretton, near Cheltenham, recently had his first haircut in more than three years. He started growing his hair shortly after his father, Chris Davis, passed away from pancreatic cancer in December 2022, just days after Christmas.
Chris was only 50 years old when he lost his battle with an aggressive form of cancer that spread rapidly. Motivated by the desire to honor his father’s memory, Oscar committed to growing out his hair while also raising funds for Kate’s Home Nursing, the local hospice that cared for his dad during his final days.
Originally aiming to raise just £100, Oscar surpassed expectations by raising an impressive £837 in donations. His long locks finally came off last week, with Oscar saying his head now feels “a lot lighter.”

Laura Davis, Oscar’s mother, shared her pride: “It was a big thing for him to do. His hair grew well past his shoulders, and seeing it all cut off was quite a moment. This haircut feels like a fresh start for him. He’s changed a lot between ages 11 and 14, and he really prefers having shorter hair now. Plus, he’s thrilled about how much money he was able to raise.”
Laura also explained the reason behind Oscar’s fundraising: “His dad was diagnosed in May 2022, but the cancer spread quickly to his liver. It was a very tough period for our family. Kate’s Home Nursing provided invaluable support by enabling Chris to spend his final days at home with us. Oscar wanted to give back to that charity.”
Oscar said, “I wanted to see how long I could grow my hair, but I’m really proud of raising that much money for such a good cause. Having short hair now feels much lighter and better.”
Helen Makaritis, CEO of Kate’s Home Nursing, expressed her gratitude: “No child should lose a parent so young. We are deeply thankful to Oscar for his incredible fundraising in memory of his dad. I’m certain Chris would be very proud of him. Thanks to Oscar’s efforts, we can provide nursing care to more families in need.”
