Teen Boy Grows Hair for Over Three Years to Honor Dad Lost to Pancreatic Cancer

Fourteen-year-old Oscar Davis from Gretton, near Cheltenham, recently had his first haircut in more than three years. He began growing his hair after losing his father, Chris, to pancreatic cancer in December 2022. At just 11 years old, Oscar decided to turn his grief into a meaningful tribute by growing out his hair and raising funds for Kate’s Home Nursing, the hospice that provided exceptional care for his dad.

Chris Davis, who was only 50, faced a swift and aggressive battle with cancer, passing away just days after Christmas. Inspired by the care his father received, Oscar set out with a modest goal to raise £100 for the North Cotswolds hospice. However, his efforts deeply resonated with the community, and he ultimately raised an impressive £837.

Last week, Oscar finally cut his long locks, which had grown well past his shoulders. He describes the experience as a “fresh start” and says his head feels “a lot lighter” after the haircut. His mother, Laura Davis, shared her pride: “It was a big step for him. Watching his hair pile up on the floor was incredible. This haircut marks a new chapter in his life, and he seems happiest with his hair short now.”

Laura also emphasized the important role Kate’s Home Nursing played during their difficult time. “Chris was diagnosed in May 2022, and the cancer spread quickly. The hospice allowed him to spend his final days at home with us, which meant so much to our family. Oscar wanted to express our gratitude through his fundraising.”

Oscar reflected on his journey, saying, “I wanted to see how long I could grow my hair, but more importantly, I’m proud of the money I raised for such a good cause.”

Helen Makaritis, CEO of Kate’s Home Nursing, expressed heartfelt thanks: “Losing a parent at such a young age is unimaginable. We are incredibly grateful to Oscar for his generosity and dedication. His father would be very proud. Oscar’s contribution will help provide care for families facing similar challenges.”
