Police in Cheltenham have arrested an 18-year-old male suspected of drug dealing and riding an illegal electric bike capable of dangerous speeds. Plainclothes officers spotted the young man speeding on a Surron e-bike around King George V playing field.
Tests revealed the bike could reach an alarming 48mph—over three times the UK’s legal e-bike speed limit of 15.5mph. Due to this breach and the ongoing drug investigation, officers seized the bike along with a large quantity of cash, drugs, and a mobile phone.
The Neighbourhood Policing Team posted about the incident on Facebook, thanking the public for their information and assuring residents that efforts continue to target those involved in criminal activity. The post described the coordinated operation carried out by PCs Lowe, Govier, and PS Ashfield, with support from the Neighbourhood Support Team.

Gloucestershire Police have issued multiple warnings about the dangers of illegal e-bikes and e-scooters, emphasizing that these vehicles cannot exceed 15.5mph when pedaling and are illegal to use on pavements and cycle paths. Their use in town centres has been on the rise, often with riders unaware of the legal limits or the risk posed to pedestrians and other road users.
Public responses to the police post underscored concerns over safety and called for stricter enforcement and regulation. Many expressed frustration that while drivers must pass tests and adhere to speed limits, illegally modified e-bikes are readily accessible and can pose a deadly threat.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenge authorities face in managing the growing popularity of high-powered e-bikes and maintaining public safety in the community.
