Take a 5-Minute Test to Discover Your Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

Are you curious about your risk of developing type 2 diabetes? The NHS recommends a simple, five-minute test that can help you understand your chances — and it could be one of the most important steps you take for your health.

While this test does not provide a definitive diagnosis, it offers valuable insight into your diabetes risk. Earlier this year, the NHS emphasized, “Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. Finding out your risk only takes a few minutes using the @DiabetesUK risk tool – it could be the most important thing you do today.”

Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or when the insulin produced is ineffective. Insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas, is essential for regulating blood sugar levels. Without proper insulin function, blood glucose can rise to dangerously high levels.

Unlike type 1 diabetes — an autoimmune condition that cannot be prevented — type 2 diabetes is largely avoidable. According to NHS guidance, the condition can often be managed or prevented through lifestyle changes like diet, exercise, and, if necessary, medication.

High blood sugar can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and nerve damage. Losing weight and improving diet may help prevent or even reverse type 2 diabetes.

To assess your risk, visit the Diabetes UK website for a quick online assessment that takes no more than five minutes. It’s recommended to have a tape measure and scales handy, as factors such as being overweight and having a waist circumference above 35 to 40 inches increase your risk.

The test also collects information about ethnicity and health, which is important because people of Black African, African Caribbean, and South Asian backgrounds are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes earlier.

Diabetes UK explains: “Know Your Risk is our trusted online tool that will help you understand your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. An estimated 6.3 million people in the UK are at increased risk. Early diagnosis means earlier treatment and better health outcomes.”

Over three million people have already used the tool to better understand their risk. The assessment is intended for adults aged 18 and over and is not suitable for pregnant women, as results may not be accurate in this group.

If you experience symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue, it’s important to seek medical advice promptly.

Taking a few minutes now to check your risk could make a significant difference in preventing serious health issues later.
