Known as Marking Day, this event marks the return of cows from their overwintering fields to graze freely on the Commons once again. The term “Marking Day” harks back to the historic practice of livestock owners gathering their animals near The Old Lodge on Minchinhampton Common to tag or mark each cow for identification before releasing them to roam.
