Symptoms of Measles: The Virus Six Times More Infectious Than Covid Spreading in the UK

The UK is currently witnessing a surge in measles cases, with health experts warning of a significant outbreak, particularly among unvaccinated children under 10. Pharmacist Niamh McMillan has detailed the critical symptoms to recognize and stressed the importance of vaccination in combating this highly contagious virus.

According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), a “big measles outbreak” is affecting schools and nurseries in north-east London, leading to hospitalizations in some cases. From January 1 to February 9, there were 34 laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Enfield alone, alongside more than 60 suspected cases reported by several schools and a nursery.

Measles is a highly infectious viral disease, spreading rapidly among those without full vaccination. While most recover, complications such as pneumonia, brain inflammation, and in rare cases, long-term disability or death, can occur.

Dr Vanessa Saliba, consultant epidemiologist at the UKHSA, highlights the severity of the outbreak: “Measles is a nasty illness for any child and can lead to long-term complications and tragically death. However, it is easily preventable with two doses of the MMR vaccine."

She urges families to ensure timely vaccinations, particularly with the Easter holidays approaching and increased international travel. Measles remains widespread in some countries and parts of Europe are experiencing ongoing outbreaks.

Measles is approximately six times more infectious than Covid-19, underlining the urgency of vaccination. Superdrug’s Pharmacy Superintendent Niamh McMillan explains: “The virus spreads through respiratory droplets and can survive in the air for up to two hours, making crowded places high-risk environments.”

Vaccination remains the most effective shield against measles. The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) provides long-term immunity and requires two doses for full protection. Superdrug offers MMR vaccinations at high street clinics nationwide for £45 per dose.

If you or your child exhibit symptoms of measles, seek medical attention immediately. To prevent further transmission, those diagnosed should stay home and avoid contact with others.

Niamh McMillan outlines the symptoms to watch for:

  • High fever: One of the earliest signs, appearing 10-12 days after exposure. Paracetamol can help reduce fever.
  • Cough, runny nose, and sore throat: Cold-like symptoms that accompany the fever.
  • White spots inside the mouth: Known as Koplik spots, these may appear on the inner lining of the cheeks but are not present in every case.
  • Rash: Typically begins on the face and spreads to the body, emerging three to five days after initial symptoms. The rash can be flat or slightly raised and may cluster into larger patches.

Being vigilant about these symptoms and ensuring vaccination can protect individuals and communities from the serious risks posed by measles.
