Concern is growing after swans and their cygnets became trapped in the silt trap of Saintbridge Balancing Pond, a popular nature reserve in Gloucester. According to local residents, these elegant birds got stuck last week while foraging, unable to reach the grassy banks due to dense reeds and exceptionally low water levels.
Councillor Andrew Gravells (Conservative, Abbeydale) has urged Gloucester City Council to take swift measures to prevent a recurrence of such distressing incidents. He requested Environment Cabinet Member Sebastian Field (Liberal Democrat, Podsmead) to meet with him and representatives from the Friends of Saintbridge Balancing Pond to explore solutions.
In a question posed at the June 11 cabinet meeting, Councillor Gravells described the situation vividly: “Last week, swans and cygnets were effectively imprisoned in the silt trap at the Saintbridge Balancing Pond. Though a few residents managed to rescue them after a distressing day contacting multiple wildlife organisations and the fire service, the birds remained visibly traumatized.”

He highlighted the need to manage the reed growth, a natural but obstructive element preventing the birds from accessing their feeding areas. “Can a section of the reeds be cut back to help them if this hasn’t been done already, considering this habitat is vital yet endangered?” he asked.
Councillor Gravells also sought an on-site meeting with Councillor Field and the Friends of Saintbridge Balancing Pond to ensure the swans and cygnets do not endure such hardship again.
Responding, Councillor Field expressed willingness to collaborate: “The silt traps usually have duck ramps to prevent incidents like this. We need more detailed information about what happened to respond effectively. I am happy to meet on site with officers to discuss the matter.”
Residents and officials alike hope these discussions will lead to actions safeguarding the wellbeing of these cherished birds and preserving the delicate ecosystem of Saintbridge Balancing Pond.
