Suzie Fletcher, renowned as the leather expert on BBC’s The Repair Shop, has shared her heartfelt story of resilience in the face of personal hardship. Originally from Oxford, she moved to Illinois, USA, to develop her skills as a master saddler. What was meant to be a two-year stay extended to 22 years after she met her future husband, Rob, shortly after arriving.
During their life together in Colorado, which Suzie described as “a western life, a ranching life,” the couple experienced both joyful and challenging times. Suzie has spoken openly about the difficulties she faced, including episodes where Rob exhibited controlling behaviour, such as restricting her clothing choices and occasionally confining her indoors. At one point, she faced a terrifying threat to her life, which left a lasting impact.
Rob passed away in 2013 at the age of 51 from pancreatic cancer. Reflecting on their relationship to The Times, Suzie acknowledged the complexities they endured, noting that Rob struggled with his own personal demons and that, despite the hardship, she was devastated by his untimely death. Following his passing, Suzie decided to return to her roots in Witney, Oxfordshire, where she now lives alongside her brother, Steve.

Suzie has expressed a strong attachment to Oxfordshire, stating, “I love Oxfordshire. I am very happy to be back in this great country and see no reason to leave ever again.”
In a 2023 interview with Lorraine Kelly, she shared insights into the dynamics of her past relationship, suggesting that Rob’s harsh treatment stemmed from his insecurities and difficulties coping with life. She described their connection as both unusual and troubled, expressing a keen interest in understanding such relationships to discover ways to heal.
Rob’s cancer diagnosis came at an advanced stage due to his reluctance to seek medical help, by which time the disease had metastasised, leaving little hope for survival. In her memoir, “The Sun Over The Mountains,” Suzie recounts the heartrending moment when she witnessed Rob’s physical decline and his determination to undertake one last motorcycling trip.
During a stop, other riders assisted Rob, who was visibly weakened and attempting to conceal his condition with layered clothing. Suzie noted the blend of humiliation and acceptance on his face, recognising a turning point where he moved from fighting the illness to coming to terms with it.
After Rob’s death, Suzie’s brother Steve recommended her to the producers of The Repair Shop, which became a significant source of support during her grieving process. She initially joked about joining but eventually embraced the opportunity, finding great joy and solace in her work on the show. Suzie described this experience as one of the most fulfilling of her life, helping her through challenging times with a sense of purpose and community.
