Frozen Yorkshire puddings are a staple for traditional British roast dinners, offering convenience when time is tight. While many families turn to frozen options, Aunt Bessie’s has long been a household name. However, a recent blind taste test conducted by Which?, the UK’s premier consumer organisation, has revealed a surprising new favourite.
Seventy-four participants sampled seven premium supermarket own-brand frozen Yorkshire puddings alongside Aunt Bessie’s. Although Aunt Bessie’s received positive feedback, it was Aldi’s Specially Selected Large Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings that took the crown, earning a top score of 73% and a Best Buy recommendation.
Priced at just £1.99 for 288g, Aldi’s offering was not only delicious but also one of the cheapest options available. Tasters praised its crispy exterior paired with an airy, soft interior that avoided sogginess. Nearly three-quarters also agreed the colour was ideal, making Aldi’s Yorkshire puddings a standout choice for both taste and value.

Aunt Bessie’s Spectacular Yorkshire Puddings came in a close second with a 72% score, priced at £2 for 220g. The panel enjoyed their crunch and tender middle, though some found the herb and spice seasoning—rosemary, cumin, sage, and horseradish—too strong for their liking. Aunt Bessie’s also appeals to vegetarians as it contains no beef dripping.
Sharing second place was Tesco Finest 6 Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings, also scoring 72%. While praised for consistency and taste by over half of the panel, some found them overly tender. Tesco’s puddings were the smallest and most expensive in the test.
Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Yorkshire Puddings took third place with 71%. Although costing more (£2.60 for 252g) than Aldi and Aunt Bessie’s, they offered a pleasant golden colour and crispy texture, with half the panel enjoying the flavour despite some softness.
Other entries included Waitrose No. 1 (69%), Iceland Luxury (68%), Lidl Deluxe (67%), and Morrisons The Best (65%). Each varied in price and size but none matched Aldi’s combination of taste, quality, and affordability.
When choosing frozen Yorkshire puddings, checking size and weight is advised, as they can vary significantly—from Tesco’s smaller 33g puddings to Aunt Bessie’s larger 55g portions. Overall, Aldi’s Specially Selected Yorkshire puddings have earned their place as the best value and taste option for your roast dinner.
