Supermarket Frozen Yorkshire Puddings Crowned Best in UK Taste Test — and They’re the Cheapest

Frozen Yorkshire puddings are a staple of the traditional British roast dinner, but making them from scratch can be time-consuming. That’s why many households turn to frozen options, with Aunt Bessie’s long considered a top choice. However, a recent blind taste test by consumer champion Which? has revealed a surprise winner: Aldi’s Specially Selected Large Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings.

Involving 74 participants, the taste test pitted seven premium supermarket own-brand frozen Yorkshire puddings — including Aunt Bessie’s — against each other. While Aunt Bessie’s was well-regarded, it was Aldi’s offering that stole the show, earning a score of 73% and the coveted Best Buy status. Remarkably, Aldi’s puddings also came with a wallet-friendly price tag of just £1.99 for 288g.

Testers praised Aldi’s puddings for their crispy exteriors and light, airy interiors, with about two-thirds noting they were soft but not soggy. Nearly 75% agreed the color was perfect, making them not only delicious but visually appealing too.

In second place, tied with Tesco Finest 6 Beef Dripping Yorkshire Puddings, were Aunt Bessie’s Spectacular Yorkshire Puddings, which scored 72%. Priced at £2 for 220g, Aunt Bessie’s impressed with its herb and spice blend, including rosemary, cumin, sage, and horseradish. This seasoning divided opinion, with some tasters finding it overpowering.

Tesco’s offering shared the same score, delivering solid consistency and taste, though it was noted for being the smallest and priciest puddings tested.

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Yorkshire Puddings took third place with 71%, costing £2.60 for 252g. Panelists liked the golden color and crispy texture, but many found them too soft overall.

Other entries included Waitrose No.1 (69%), Iceland Luxury (68%), Lidl Deluxe (67%), and Morrisons The Best (65%), each varying in taste scores and price per 100g.

It’s worth noting that Yorkshire pudding sizes differ between brands — Aunt Bessie’s puddings weigh 55g each, Tesco’s are smaller at 33g, while most others hover around 48g. Shoppers should consider size and price when choosing their perfect roast dinner companion.

In summary, Aldi’s Specially Selected frozen Yorkshire puddings offer the best balance of taste, quality, and affordability, making them a worthy addition to any kitchen.
