After six years, Julian Dunkerton’s infamous “tatty tents” outside No 131 The Promenade in Cheltenham are finally set to be removed. The temporary marquees, initially installed in summer 2020 as a Covid-19 response to facilitate outdoor dining, have long been a subject of controversy.
Installed during a relaxation of planning rules aimed at supporting local businesses during the pandemic, the marquees remained in place even after the temporary permissions expired in 2022. Local objections, including from the Cheltenham Civic Society who criticized the structures for their worn appearance, led to a protracted planning battle.
Cheltenham Borough Council rejected proposals to retain the marquees in November 2022, a decision later upheld by a planning inspector in summer 2023. Following enforcement action and an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate, the marquees will now be removed.

Concurrent with the removal, approved plans for a sleek metal pergola with a retractable roof will see the creation of a high-quality terrace to enhance outside seating at the boutique hotel and restaurant. Work on this new terrace will commence this month, with completion expected by October 2024.
The new structure promises a striking design that complements Cheltenham’s iconic Regency architecture, offering a premium, year-round hospitality space in one of the town’s most prominent locations.
Julian Dunkerton, co-founder of Superdry and owner of No 131, expressed enthusiasm for the project: “We are excited to begin work on this significant investment in No 131 and Cheltenham. The new terrace will create an exceptional space for guests while enhancing the appearance of The Promenade and supporting the town’s thriving hospitality and tourism economy.”
A spokesperson for No 131 emphasized that the design of the new terrace aims to blend harmoniously with the historic streetscape, describing it as an elegant and contemporary addition. The upgrade is expected to further cement Cheltenham’s standing as one of the UK’s premier leisure and hospitality destinations.
This initiative is part of a broader wave of investment by Dunkerton and fellow investor Jade Holland Cooper, whose ventures have contributed to job creation, boosted visitor numbers, and supported local businesses, playing a vital role in Cheltenham’s ongoing growth and prosperity.
Throughout the renovation, No 131’s hotel and its Terrace Restaurant will remain open, ensuring continuity for guests as the transformation progresses.
