Stroud Brewery and Taproom in Gloucestershire have cancelled a planned event titled “Porn: Positive or Problematic?” following concerns raised by community members. The event, organized by local group GlosWomen, was scheduled for Saturday, April 18, to explore the social effects of pornography.
In a statement released on social media, Stroud Brewery explained that within 24 hours of learning about the concerns, they fast-tracked their internal review processes and determined the event would not move forward. The brewery emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all patrons.
“We take community concerns seriously and aspire to create a space where sensitive topics can be discussed constructively without compromising the comfort and safety of attendees,” the statement read. Stroud Brewery also noted it is reviewing its booking policies to balance open dialogue with the need for a respectful environment.

The cancellation has provoked mixed reactions. The event was to feature Jo Bartosch and Robert Jessel, co-authors of the book Pornocracy. Bartosch, known for her writings like “The dangers of gender affirming care are now undeniable,” and Jessel, author of Bonnie Blue: An inconvenient truth about porn, intended to lead the discussion. Following the cancellation, Bartosch criticized the brewery’s decision on social media, stating the event was canceled because of their views affirming biological sex.
Despite the cancellation at Stroud Brewery, both Bartosch and Jessel are scheduled to speak about their book at a parliamentary event on Monday, April 20.
