‘Strong and reliable’ father-of-three killed by driver high on cocaine in fatal crash

A beloved father-of-three from Evesham, described by his family as “strong and reliable,” lost his life in a tragic collision caused by a driver impaired by cocaine and operating an unsafe vehicle.

Andy Hirons, 52, was fatally injured on August 15, 2024, after being struck while riding his motorbike on the A4538 Pershore Lane in Worcestershire. Joshua Smith, 31, of Holloway, Pershore, was behind the wheel of an orange BMW 1 Series when he lost control on a bend, crossing into oncoming traffic and colliding first with another motorcyclist and then with Mr. Hirons.

West Mercia Police confirmed Smith was under the influence of cocaine at the time, confirmed by a positive roadside drug test and blood toxicology report. He was also driving a car with dangerously defective brakes and worn-out rear tyres, significantly reducing grip and braking performance, especially in the wet conditions present at the time of the crash.

Smith was convicted at Worcester Crown Court of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving with a controlled drug above the legal limit. He received a six-year prison sentence and an eight-year driving ban, delivered by Her Honour Judge Gilmore.

The police investigation revealed Smith’s BMW had severely compromised safety features: the nearside rear brake pad was completely worn down to metal, and both rear tyres fell below the legal minimum tread depth. One tyre was even split open, exposing cords — all factors that likely contributed to the loss of control.

Andy Hirons was thrown from his bike during the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency responders’ efforts. He leaves behind his wife Tracey, their three adult children—including their eldest daughter who has Down Syndrome—and four grandchildren.

In a heartfelt tribute, Tracey described Andy as the family’s cornerstone: “He was the life and soul of every family gathering, a devoted and loyal man with a heart of gold. His sudden loss has left a void that can never be filled.” She also spoke about the devastating impact on their family and the fear endured by their daughter since Andy’s passing.

Andy had a passion for motorcycling, often attending weekly meets, and was a devoted retained firefighter for eight years, committed to helping others in need.

Detective Sergeant Rose Hughes of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit emphasized the dangerous consequences of impaired driving and poor vehicle maintenance. “No sentence can undo this tragedy, but we hope it serves as a stark warning. Driving under the influence of drugs and neglecting basic vehicle safety can have tragic consequences. Regular checks of tyre tread and brake condition are vital to protect all road users.”
