‘Strong and reliable’ father killed in crash with driver high on cocaine

Andy Hirons, a devoted father-of-three from Evesham, tragically lost his life in a collision caused by a driver under the influence of cocaine. The fatal crash occurred on August 15, 2024, on the A4538 Pershore Lane, Worcestershire, when Joshua Smith, 31, was driving an orange BMW 1 Series in dangerously poor condition at high speed.

Smith, from Holloway, Pershore, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and driving with cocaine levels exceeding the legal limit. At Worcester Crown Court, he received a six-year prison sentence and an eight-year driving ban.

Investigations revealed that Smith lost control of his vehicle in wet conditions, crossing into the opposing lane and colliding first with one motorcyclist before fatally striking Mr. Hirons, who was riding a Yamaha motorbike. Despite emergency services' best efforts, Andy Hirons was pronounced dead at the scene.

Further examination showed Smith’s BMW had critically defective brakes and severely worn tires, factors contributing to the crash. The police detailed that his rear brake pad was fully worn, causing metal rub on the rear disc, diminishing brake efficiency. Both rear tires had tread depths well below the legal minimum 1.6mm, with notable damage exposing cords and splitting tire walls, drastically reducing grip on wet roads.

Andy’s wife, Tracey, paid a heartfelt tribute highlighting his warmth, reliability, and dedication. She described Andy as the “life and soul” of the family, a loyal and lovable man who cared deeply for his loved ones. Tracey shared the profound impact of Andy’s sudden loss on their family, especially their eldest daughter with Down Syndrome, underscoring the void left by his passing.

Detective Sergeant Rose Hughes of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit emphasized Smith’s reckless disregard for public safety. She reminded drivers about the severe risks of driving under drug influence and the critical importance of vehicle maintenance. Hughes urged regular checks of tire tread depth and brake conditions, emphasizing these measures can be life-saving.

This devastating case underscores the fatal consequences of impaired and negligent driving, leaving a family mourning a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.
