Storm Goretti Brings Heavy Snow and Travel Warnings to Gloucestershire

The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings as Storm Goretti approaches, bringing significant snowfall and potentially dangerous travel conditions to parts of Gloucestershire and South West England.

An amber warning for snow is in effect from 8 pm on Thursday, January 8, until 9 am the following day. This warning specifically covers a small region around Gloucestershire, affecting travelers heading north from areas such as Evesham and Monmouth. Motorists should expect travel disruptions, including delays and cancellations, throughout the night.

In addition, a broader yellow warning is active from 5 pm Thursday to 12 pm Friday, encompassing South West England locations like Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Swindon, and Wiltshire.

The Met Office predicts the rain will transition to snow as the storm moves in, with accumulations ranging between 10 to 15 cm fairly widely, and up to 20 to 30 cm in some areas. Power outages and the potential for communities to become isolated are also concerns during this period.

Travel safety is a top priority. The Met Office advises against driving unless absolutely necessary. For essential journeys, drivers should take precautions: use dipped headlights, accelerate gently, start in second gear to reduce wheel slip, maintain safe distances, and avoid sudden braking. Steering into skids and keeping hands on the wheel are also critical for control in slippery conditions.

For those who might become snowbound at home, the Met Office offers practical advice to stay safe and warm: maintain a consistent thermostat setting day and night, switch off electrical heaters and ensure fires are out before bedtime, keep pets comfortable, prevent frozen pipes by opening cabinet doors near plumbing, stay indoors and warmly dressed, and keep internal doors closed to retain heat. Those needing assistance can contact the British Red Cross Support Line at 0808 196 3651.

This warning follows an amber health alert from the UK Health Security Agency, which highlights risks to older adults—particularly those over 65—and possible health impacts on younger populations due to the ongoing cold snap.

Residents and travelers in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and take these warnings seriously to ensure safety during Storm Goretti’s impact.
