Steve Cotterill Reflects on Tommy Taylor’s Impact at Cheltenham Town

Tommy Taylor has returned to Ipswich Town following a loan spell at Cheltenham Town during the first half of the season. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder and forward featured in 16 matches across all competitions, including 12 appearances from the bench and one League Two start.

Taylor’s loan stint saw several memorable moments. He made substitute appearances in two FA Cup matches, most notably playing the final 20 minutes of Cheltenham’s 2-0 loss to Championship side Leicester City. Additionally, he started twice in the EFL Trophy, where he scored his first senior goal in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s. Cheltenham ultimately triumphed 3-1 on penalties, with Taylor confidently converting his spot kick.

Cheltenham boss Steve Cotterill praised Taylor’s attitude and contributions, emphasizing the value of his experience at the club. “I had a great chat with Tommy. He’s a fantastic young player and a great lad,” Cotterill said. “The players gave him a warm round of applause to thank him for his efforts. Eleven or twelve appearances at this stage are quite encouraging, and he’s been very appreciative.”

Cotterill highlighted the significance of Taylor’s development during his time at Cheltenham. “He had his first EFL game and scored his first senior goal here. We’ve played a small part in his progress, and I’m sure he won’t forget his time with us – nor will we forget him. Now, he needs to aim for 20 games somewhere to continue growing.”

Meanwhile, Cheltenham’s other Ipswich loanee, defender Jacob Mazionis, returned last week after a loan plagued by injuries. Forward Jake Bickerstaff departed Cheltenham after converting his loan from Wrexham into an 18-month permanent contract. With several other loanees recalled or transferred, Cheltenham currently have only MK Dons centre-back Sam Sherring on loan, who is recovering from a hamstring tendon injury. Cotterill indicated that Sherring’s future at the club depends on his recovery.

Cheltenham Town are set to face Oldham Athletic away in League Two this Saturday at 3pm, as they look to build on their season’s progress.
