Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill expressed his thoughts following the 1-1 draw against Colchester United, emphasising that his team should have secured victory. Despite initial sluggishness in the first 20 to 25 minutes-possibly due to the long journey the previous day-Cotterill felt Cheltenham grew into the game and dominated much of the second half with superior fitness and several scoring opportunities which they failed to convert.
Reflecting on Colchester’s solitary goal, Cotterill described it as “very much against the run of play,” resulting from some fortunate rebounds and a well-placed pass that left Cheltenham a man short in defence. Although disappointed, he acknowledged that overall his side performed well, especially compared to previous encounters where victories had eluded them.
The penalty awarded to Cheltenham was described as “absolutely nailed on,” and Andi Weimann confidently converted it. Regarding Colchester’s red card, Cotterill confirmed upon review that it was indeed a justified dismissal. However, he suggested that the man advantage did not significantly aid Cheltenham, as Colchester responded by consolidating defensively.
