Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill is determined to bolster his squad’s attacking options after encountering two significant setbacks in his striker pursuit this week.
So far this summer, Cotterill has successfully signed six players, covering key positions including goalkeeper, left-back, centre-half, two central midfielders, and a left winger. Now, his focus shifts to securing a proven striker and two wide players ahead of the new season, which kicks off with Cheltenham hosting Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup first round in a fortnight. Additionally, he aims to add another midfielder and strengthen the defense further.
However, his plans hit a snag. One preferred centre-forward candidate suffered a severe hamstring injury during a recent match, ruling him out. Meanwhile, another target appears set to join a League One club, pushing Cheltenham back to the drawing board.

“It’s disappointing news,” Cotterill admitted. “Our scout Russ Milton saw the match where our main striker target got a serious hamstring injury, so he’s off the table. We immediately looked at another prospect, but he seems to be moving up to a League One side, so we’re back to square one.”
Despite the frustrations, Cotterill remains resolute. “It felt like a tough blow, but I can’t dwell on it. I have a responsibility to the current squad, who are performing well. We just need to add depth in key areas and will keep pushing. There’s still time before the transfer window closes, and we’re not done strengthening.”
Cotterill acknowledges the challenge posed by budget limitations compared to rivals but emphasizes a strategic approach: “We must be smart and persistent — like a dog with a bone — to find the right players.”
His optimism is buoyed by a strong squad spirit following a convincing 6-1 preseason victory at Southern League Division One South newcomers Slimbridge AFC. Charlie McCann and George Miller each scored twice, with Jordan Shipley and Mark Barber also adding to the tally. Slimbridge’s lone goal came from Jack Smith.
Midfielder Shaun McWilliams made his first start after newly becoming a father, and new goalkeeper Wyll Stanway appeared in the second half. Club captain James Wilson remains sidelined with a calf injury but is expected to be fit for the Carabao Cup clash against Charlton on August 8.
Cotterill concludes, “It’s been a tough summer, but the players' energy keeps me motivated. I’m committed to building the strongest squad possible for the challenges ahead.”
